Washington Mills manufactures tough, hard, productive, American made blasting abrasives for your tough grit blasting jobs. Of all the blasting media available, Washington Mills' abrasive blasting grains stand above the rest in terms of value and performance. Our abrasive blasting grains, also referred to as sand blast media, when propelled by air become powerful multi-edged abrasive tools that consistently penetrate work pieces and result in exceptionally clean, etched surfaces. Washington Mills manufactures white and brown aluminum oxide blasting grit in many different sizes and specifications. We are the industry leader in aluminum oxide grit blasting media. We can dependably supply your abrasive grit needs and help you choose the right blasting media for your particular job.
Blasting Media, or abrasive grit, is used to clean and prepare surfaces prior to applying coatings or to produce a desired surface profile. Grit blasting is an essential part in preparing a surface for finishing because the performance of the final coating very much depends on how well the surface was prepared. Blasting media, such as aluminum oxide, is an abrasive grit that is blasted through a wet or dry pressure blasting system. The process of abrasive blasting, or grit blasting, removes the containments and unwanted substances from the piece’s surface in order to produce a clean surface that will promote adhesion to the final coating. Washington Mills abrasive blasting grain is highly effective on many surfaces including: metals, glass, ceramics, marble, granite and other stone.
At Washington Mills, our abrasive grit blasting material, Blastite BT, is produced by super-heating abrasive grade bauxite in electric-arc furnaces at temperatures exceeding 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting fused aluminum oxide is then poured into ingots, cooled and systematically crushed into trillions of particles. The particles are carefully classified into individual grit sizes and sold as abrasive blasting media.
Blastite BT has a single crystalline structure - marked by uniformly high strength throughout. The abrasive blasting grains are manufactured in blocky shapes with multiple, sharp cutting edges. Blastite BT abrasive grain is an inert material containing no free silica or contaminants. This grit blasting abrasive is unaffected by atmosphere and non-reactive with alkalis or acids.
Washington Mills is one of the world’s largest producers of fused aluminum oxide, producing in excess of 100 million pounds annually and is like no other abrasive grain manufacturer. No one can match the availability of Blastite BT; which is specifically created for abrasive blasting applications

A closely sized, tough, medium density, virgin fused brown aluminum oxide abrasive. One of the hardest and toughest abrasives you can buy, Blastite is designed for the pressure blasting of materials of almost every type, including: glass, granite, marble, and ceramic and it is also used for the preparation of surfaces prior to painting or bonding; as well as for light de-burring, scale removal, and the generation of matte finishes.
A group graded, virgin brown aluminum oxide for use in blasting operations where size control is less critical.
A more closely graded, high purity fused white aluminum oxide that is composed of sharp, friable grains - specially treated for removal of iron. It is a more costly, premium material - for use where surface contamination is unacceptable.
An extremely hard, sharp grain that is more friable than aluminum oxide. Designed for or use in blasting of extremely hard materials.
